BEC HIGHER The use of IT in the workplace (60′)

This is a 60′ Listening lesson, based on the BEC higher Exam (Part 01). The topic is “You’ll hear an introduction to a seminar called, the Business Master Class, about the use of Information Technology in the workplace”. This is Level C1 CEFR. Actually, this lesson was planned to show my dear students that it is not that difficult.

1.Introducing the topic of the lesson 

  • Interaction: T-SS
  • Timing: 2′
  • Monitoring: Check whether students are on the same page as you are.
  • Feedback: only if need be.
  • Steps: Show students the first and second slides.

2.Setting the Scene & Pre-Teaching Vocabulary (Pre)

A)

  • Interaction: T-Ss / S-Ss / S-S
  • Timing: 10′ 
  • Monitoring: Teacher walks around the room and takes notes on students’ contributions.
  • Feedback: Focus on Vocabulary and Pronunciation at this stage.
  • Steps: 1) Tell students: You are organising a seminar on the use of Information Technology in your workplace. 2) Now, in pairs or trios, you have to decide upon:
  • The venue
  • The Keynote
  • The title of the session
  • Participation with a permit?
  • It will take place over…?

B)

  • Interaction: T-Ss / S-Ss / S-S
  • Timing: 10′ 
  • Monitoring: Teacher walks around the room and takes notes on students’ contributions.
  • Feedback: Focus on Vocabulary and Pronunciation at this stage.
  • Steps: 1) Tell students that now they will be anticipating the problems that might happen with the seminar or post-seminar. 2) Tell students to focus on:

Anticipating possible problems

  • Customer-driven
  • New organisational structures
  • Framework for actions
  • Real-life case studies

4. Listening Task (Part 01) – While.

  • Interaction: T-Ss (instructions) / Listening- Ss /  S-Ss / S-S (checking their answers)
  • Timing: 15′ (10 for the listening task + sharing) / 5′ checking and understanding) 
  • Monitoring: Teacher stays still while the listening is taking place. The Teacher walks around the room while students are checking and take notes on their contributions.
  • Feedback: It can be on the spot (pairwork). After ss have checked, show them the answers. 
  • Steps: 1) Show students the Task itself on the board. And at first you can read the instructions with them: “You’ll hear an introduction to a seminar called, the Business Master Class, about the use of Information Technology in the workplace”. As you listen, complete with up to 3 words or a number. You’ll hear the recording twice. 2) The teacher plays the recording twice. 3) The students check in pairs and defend their answers.

5. Listening Task (Part 01) – Post / Work on Vocabulary

  • Interaction: T-Ss / S-Ss / S-S 
  • Timing: 15′
  • Monitoring: The Teacher walks around the room while students are checking and take notes on their contributions.
  • Feedback: 
  • Steps: 1) Show students the words on the board. They are divided into 3 groups. Ask students what they are and/or why. A) Collocations B) Vocabulary C) Pronunciation. After they do that, ask students if they remember these words from the listening. Work on the prepositions for collocations, pronunciation and meaning os all the words.

6. Listening Task (Part 01) – Follow-up / Work on Vocabulary

  • Interaction: T-Ss / S-Ss / S-S 
  • Timing: 3′
  • Monitoring: The Teacher walks around the room while students are checking and take notes on their contributions.
  • Feedback: 
  • Steps: 1) Ask students to use the collocations and vocabulary to talk about the use of IT in their workplace.

At this stage, you are going to build the listening tips or techniques with your students. For example: Ask them:

How did you start doing the task? Did you read it? Did you take notes? Did you underline keywords? Was information in order?

Eliciting the steps from the students make them more aware (in my experience)

7.Revisit the topic of the lesson 

  • Interaction: T-SS
  • Timing: 2′

Ask students to list the collocations, vocabulary etc they have acquired in this lesson.
